Budapest gets ready for the 2024 Chess Olympiad

Budapest is eagerly anticipating the 2024 Chess Olympiad, scheduled from September 10th to 23rd, adding to its impressive record of 12 team medals. With an illustrious chess history, Hungary proudly hosts the 45th Chess Olympiad, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of FIDE’s establishment, drawing chess enthusiasts and top players worldwide to Hungary’s capital. From legends like Géza Maróczy to modern stars like Judit Polgar, Hungary has been a breeding ground for chess talent. The BOK Sports Hall will serve as the tournament venue, offering a state-of-the-art setting.

In a landmark move for inclusivity, the 2024 Chess Olympiad will include a team of refugees, endorsed by the UNHCR, emphasizing chess’s role in promoting diversity. Gender equality is a focus, with efforts to increase women’s team participation. Alongside intense chess battles, the event will feature cultural programs and children’s events, creating an immersive experience. The FIDE Congress, marking 100 years since its formation, will run concurrently.

It will be the first-ever 5G Chess Olympiad, allowing matches to be followed in real-time and enabling anyone to play a game from the comfort of their own room. The Hungarian Chess Federation has announced a “Green Chess Olympiad,” aiming to eliminate the use of paper and plastic at the event. Participants are encouraged to travel between hotels and competition venues by bicycle, promoting sustainability and eco-friendly practices.
